WHAT IS KABADDI?

Kabaddi is a popular sport in India played in both rural and urban areas. The purpose of the game is to tag the other team and return to your own side, all while chanting the word "kabaddi" in one breath. Kabaddi dates back to over 4,000 years ago and has elements similar to both rugby and wrestling. Rules were standardized in 1950 and teams have competed internationally since 1980. Kabaddi is expecially popular in Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and the Punjab as well as outside India includin Nepal, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Japan.

WHY KABADDI?

Satyagyan Foundations's annual kabaddi tournament aims to increase women's self-confidence through sport. Encouraging womens' participation in kabaddi not only breaks down social barriers and gender norms, but fosters teamwork and courage. Bringing women's kabaddi teams to our annual tournament enables these women to share common experiences and see their efforts realized through this event.

HISTORY

Our kabaddi tournament started in an unlikely place, at a movie theatre! When WLC leaders watched the film Chak Dei! India (Go India!) in 2007 they left feeling inspired. The movie followed a dysfunctional women's hockey team that worked together to win the world championship. Its representation of strong women pursuing what they loved motivated WLC to develop a project that showed women's strength through sport and in 2008 WLC had its first kabaddi tournament. Since the beginning, thousands of women have attended annually.
