OUR MODEL

STEP

#1

EDUCATION: Adult Literacy & Library Services
First women enrol in a 6 month literacy class through our sister NGO, World Literacy Canada, where they learn reading, writing and mathematical skills. Library services are provided in communities, offering books for all ages and a specialized business section for aspiring entrepreneurs.
LIVELIHOOD: Tailoring & Beautician Course
Women with basic literacy skills enrol in vocational courses where they learn the essentials for the art of tailoring or cosmetology. In an intimate class setting students gain the tools they need for employment and to support their families.

STEP

#2

ECONOMIC FREEDOM: Self Help Groups
After completing a skills training course, women begin running community-based savings groups. They learn how to open a bank account, manage their money, and elect representatives. Once the group has reached a sufficient capital, they begin providing micro-loans to members of the group.

STEP

#3

EMPOWERMENT: Annual Kabaddi Tournament
Members of the literacy classes, vocational classes, and self help groups all come together for International Women's Day to share their voices and celebrate their right to movement. Women participate in a Kabaddi tournament and through the rugged sport confront gender stereotypes and develop confidence.
