SATYAGYAN AND WORLD LITERACY CANADA:

Satyagyan Foundation is the sister organization to World Literacy Canada (WLC), a small, secular, Canadian charity that has worked in Uttar Pradesh for over 60 years delivering adult literacy classes for women. To date, WLC's literacy and education programs have created a newly literate and capable community of over 250,000 women and children in over 400 communities in eastern Uttar Pradesh.

By 2007, WLC realized  that the development of technical skills is a crucial next step for female empowerment after literacy. With modest means WLC began a social enterprise program and trained 1000 seamstresses and beauticians over the course of five years. However, WLC realized that an organization solely devoted to the economic empowerment of women would be more effective. Satyagyan’s legal status in India gives it a strategic advantage, as it can fundraise and accept sponsorships within India.

Since its founding in 2009, Satyagyan has gone on to attain full registration under Indian law. It has established a strong working relationship with WLC and carried out market research to identify niches where it can promote women's products throughout India. It has also trained hundreds more women in over 400 communities with skills they need to compete on an uneven playing field.
